Should I focus on 0 Volume keywords

The age-old question every SEO hears; Why would I focus on a volume with no one searching? Read on to find out why this question is easily answered…

This keyword has zero search volume keywords, why are we targeting this?

Whilst that is a great question, it’s easily answered by another great SEO quote…IT DEPENDS.

What does it depend on?

Well, there are a lot of factors that should be thought about before you decide to target a 0 volume keyword.

Should I Focus on Zero Search Volume Keywords 1

You’re in an Emerging Industry

if your industry is emerging, then we would expect to see a lot of zero search volume keywords, but you can relate those to other similar industries to get a feel of what the potential keyword could be and then target that selection of keywords.

Too Competitive Keywords

There are many high-volume keywords in your industry, but your website hasn’t got enough authority to compete with the sharks of the search world just yet; this is a consideration I would take if you want users on your site as soon as possible, whether it’s four users or one.

No Volume but Commercial Intent

You have volume for information keywords like ‘What is SEO’, but your commercial & transaction keywords that target your audience at the buying stage are showing at zero search volume. This is the best-case scenario for using a zero search volume keyword.

You have a Niche Industry

If you have a natural niche industry, then it’s likely you’re going to see lower volume keywords such as 10 and zero search volume, but there is nothing to worry about because that’s what a niche is, you’re obtaining a niche in an industry, meaning you specialise in a particular subject or product. In this use case, we would still target a keyword with 0 volume if we feel that it’s relevant to the page and it’s most likely what users are typing in. You can get a feel for what users are typing in through the search results for your term or even relating to other industries to gain an idea of relatable search queries.

Targeting Longtail Keywords

If a long-tail phrase or question has no search volume, try typing in the shorter phrase with higher search volume into a search engine while in incognito mode. You might discover that the question actually appears in the results, and you can attract traffic from it via different search mediums such a:

  • People Also Ask.
  • Related searches.
  • Videos.
  • Knowledge panels.
  • Other.

In case the titles or responses of these pages match your topic, you have the option to replace them with more relevant and superior content that offers a better user experience. This can work even if your target phrase has no search volume as long as it appears in a similar phrase that has 20,000 monthly searches. This technique can be helpful for clients who have recently launched their website and are not yet prepared for link building.

Conclusion

So to round it up, yes…well…sometimes, if any of these match your business or clientele, then it’s well worth targeting and if you’re not sure it’s producing results, then track against those keywords.
