1. Phishing emails: the doppelgänger in your inbox

Phishing hit 38% of UK businesses last year, making it the most common cyber attack by far (Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2025/2026). It happened to us too. In June 2026, fraudsters sent fake renewal emails to Solve clients using our name, real service details and invented deadlines.

👻 Ghost-hunter fix: genuine businesses only email from their own domain. If it comes from Gmail, it isn’t us. Read our guide on what to do with suspicious emails.

2. Google rankings: the page-one graveyard

Only 0.63% of Google searchers click on anything from page two (Backlinko, 2019). Meanwhile, the top result takes an average 27.6% click-through rate, and the top three results share more than half of all clicks. Sit on page two, and you’re buried where nobody digs.

👻 Ghost-hunter fix: SEO built on expertise, structure and authority, not tricks. See why SEO matters in 2026.

3. Social media search: the social séance

Around 78% of internet users now research products and brands on social platforms. Among Gen Z, 67% search on Instagram and 62% on TikTok, compared with 61% on Google.

👻 Ghost-hunter fix: treat social as a search engine and build content around what your customers actually type. Read our four social media shifts for 2026.

4. AI in advertising: the AI-generated ghoul

A June 2026 Harris Poll with the 4As and Infillion found that 78% of consumers say AI makes ads feel less authentic, and 63% are less likely to buy from brands that lean on it.

👻 Ghost-hunter fix: use AI for the machine, not the message. Keep real people at the front of your brand.

5. WordPress vulnerabilities: the cursed plugin

Patchstack logged 11,334 new WordPress vulnerabilities in 2025, up 42% on 2024. Around 36% posed a genuine, exploitable threat, and most sit in third-party plugins and themes.

6. Brute-force attacks: the 16-billion-strong zombie horde

In Q1 2026 alone, Wordfence’s network blocked 16 billion brute-force login attempts, up 15.3% on the previous quarter. Some 474,000 sites showed signs of infection.

👻 Ghost-hunter fix: strong unique passwords, 2FA, a firewall and daily off-site backups. Here are 10 ways to secure a WordPress site.

7. Mobile page speed: the three-second vanishing act

More than half of mobile websites still fail Google’s Core Web Vitals, the speed and usability checks behind page experience. Only 48% pass, and loading speed is the hardest test, with just 62% of mobile sites hitting a good score (HTTP Archive Web Almanac, 2025). With mobile now carrying most web traffic, a slow site is the first thing many customers meet.

👻 Ghost-hunter fix: fast hosting, compressed images and lean code. Learn how to improve page load speed.

8. Bounce rate and load time: the creeping bounce

One in ten website sessions still hits a slow-loading page (Contentsquare Digital Experience Benchmark, 2026). Visitors are also spending less time on site and viewing fewer pages than a year ago, so a slow page burns traffic you’ve already paid for.

👻 Ghost-hunter fix: Solve’s green hosting clients see an average 132% speed improvement, and up to 432% on performance plans. Read more on site speed and conversion.

9. Zero-click searches: the zero-click zombies

Around 80% of consumers now rely on zero-click results, such as AI Overviews, for at least 40% of their searches (Bain & Company). They get the answer and never visit a website.

👻 Ghost-hunter fix: measure impressions, brand mentions and AI citations, not just clicks. Find out more about the rise in zero-click searches.

10. AI Overviews and click-through rate: the vanishing click

When Google shows an AI summary, users click a normal search result in just 8% of visits, versus 15% without one. They click a link inside the summary only 1% of the time (Pew Research Center, March 2025 data).

👻 Ghost-hunter fix: become the source AI quotes. Clear, expert, well-structured content earns citations. Explore our AI SEO service.

Digital Marketing Stats FAQs

What are the scariest digital marketing stats for 2026?

The biggest frights are around AI search. Users click a standard result in just 8% of visits when Google shows an AI summary, and around 80% of consumers rely on zero-click results for at least 40% of their searches

How does site speed affect bounce rate?

Slow pages push visitors away before they engage. Contentsquare’s 2026 benchmark found slow loading still affects 1 in 10 website sessions, and the 2025 Web Almanac found more than half of mobile sites fail Google’s Core Web Vitals.

How common are WordPress security threats?

Patchstack logged 11,334 new WordPress vulnerabilities in 2025, up 42% on 2024, and most sit in third-party plugins and themes.

Where do these digital marketing statistics come from?

Every stat comes from published research, including the UK government’s Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2025/2026, Pew Research Center, the HTTP Archive Web Almanac, Contentsquare, Bain & Company and Patchstack. We’ve linked each source and included its date, so you can check the figures yourself. All figures were correct as of October 2026.

What is the most common cyber attack on UK businesses?

Phishing, by a wide margin. The UK government’s Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2025/2026 found phishing hit 38% of UK businesses in the previous 12 months. Of the organisations that were breached, 69% named phishing as their most disruptive attack.

How can I tell if an email from my digital agency is a phishing scam?

Check the sender’s address first. Genuine businesses email from their own domain, not Gmail or Outlook accounts. Be wary of urgent deadlines, unexpected payment requests or new bank details. If in doubt, contact the agency using details you already have, not the ones in the email.

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks to websites?

Yes. Pew Research Center found that when Google showed an AI summary, users clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% without one. They clicked a link inside the summary just 1% of the time. The data covers US users in March 2025.

What is a zero-click search?

A zero-click search is one where the user gets their answer directly on the results page, from an AI Overview, featured snippet or knowledge panel, and never visits a website. Bain & Company found around 80% of consumers rely on zero-click results for at least 40% of their searches.

How many people click on the second page of Google?

Almost nobody. Backlinko’s analysis of 4 million search results found only 0.63% of searchers clicked a result on page two. The top result averaged a 27.6% click-through rate, and the top three results took more than half of all clicks. The data dates from 2019.
