The rise in Zero-click Searches

With significant shifts reshaping the search industry, from Google I/O 2026 to AI shopping agents, the ten blue links are becoming less and less the point. More searches are being answered before a user ever clicks anything. More buying decisions are being influenced by AI-generated responses, forum threads, and third-party mentions that never show up in a traditional rank tracker, contributing to the rise of the zero click searches.

So, what does this mean for your business and what does modern SEO actually look like now?

Well…It’s broader. It’s about where your brand shows up and what people are saying about your brand, not just whether you’re in position #1 on the first page of Google.

So, what are zero click searches?

A zero click search is simply what happens when Google, or any search engine (including AI engines), answers a query before you ever need to visit a website. Whether someone is looking for a product, a service, or just a quick fact, AI Overviews, SERP features, AI Mode and individual AI search engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, you name it) now surface that answer instantly, right there on the page, with no need for the user to do any more manual work.

Take this as an example. You’re considering switching your site’s hosting to something more sustainable, but you need a rough price guide to convince your board. So you type “green hosting prices” into Google. Before you even think about clicking a result, an AI Overview is already on the screen – pulling from multiple sources, giving you exactly what you need in seconds. You get your answer, and move on to the next thing. No click. No visit. No traffic recorded anywhere.

That is a zero click search. And it is happening millions of times a day – the uncomfortable truth is we do it without even thinking. AI Overviews are now baked into how we expect a search results page to look. They are trusted, they are instant, and quietly we are becoming more reliant on them with every search we run. According to Bain & Company, around 80% of consumers now rely on zero click search results in at least 40% of their searches (Sommerfeld et al., 2025).

Why clicks and rankings no longer tell the full story

For years, the SEO report told a simple story. Rankings up, clicks rising, traffic flowing – what you were doing was working.

However, the whole model was built around a traditional search experience where ten blue links competed for a single click, each one fighting with the most compelling title and description to pull you in.

Now, the playing field has changed. To stay ahead of the curve, you need to show up in AI Overviews and AI search engines. You need content that’s relevant, topical, and genuinely useful, plus trust built across multiple sources, from backlinks, citations, and real people mentioning/talking about your brand.

The New Metrics That Matter

With that comes a shift in how we measure SEO performance. Moving away from traditional metrics like clicks and rankings, towards metrics that reflect the bigger picture and where your brand actually stands.

That said, rankings and clicks still matter, they’re just no longer the main characters in the story.

Impressions

Impressions pick up where clicks leave off. They show you how often your site is appearing for a given query, even when no one follows through. If your impressions are growing, your content is being seen and likely within ai overviews. That matters, even without the click. Showing up builds brand visibility and demonstrates expertise, and over time, that’s what earns trust.

Brand mentions

Every time your business is referenced on a credible site, discussed in a forum, or cited in an industry article, it adds to the wider picture of your authority. These are the signals AI tools draw from when deciding whose answer to surface. You do not always need the link. You need the presence and mentions.

AI citations

As AI-generated responses become the modern search experience, tracking whether your brand is being surfaced and referenced within them is fast becoming a meaningful indicator of how well your SEO is actually performing. The tooling is still catching up, but it is worth paying attention to now. The brands building that presence today are the ones that will be the trusted source in the future.

Authority

Authority is the measure of how much trust search engines and AI tools place in your domain and your content. It is built over time through consistent quality, credible backlinks, and a clear topical focus. A strong authority score tells you that your site is being treated as a reliable source, therefore will be cited more.

Technical health

None of the metrics above matter if the foundations are not in order. Site speed, crawlability, mobile experience, Core Web Vitals are key. A slow or poorly structured site will limit how your website content is interpreted by AI.

Search has moved on. It’s time your reporting and perspectives did too

Zero-click searches are not a threat to good SEO. They are a signal that visibility means something broader than it used to. The businesses that grow through search over the next few years will not necessarily be the ones at position one. They will be the ones with the most consistent, most trusted presence across every surface search now touches.
