Christmas Gift to the Planet

Dear valued Solve customer,

We love using our business for good. So instead of sending gifts directly to you as thanks for being awesome, we have sent the planet gifts from you!

Have a look at what you gifted the planet for Christmas…

With the prezzies we purchased for our wonderful clients, combined, we have offset 27 tonnes of CO2 is equivalent to one of the following:

How we achieved this?

We partnered with Ecologi to support these wonderful projects:

Mangrove planting at Kandrany, Madagascar

Solve have planted 525 mangrove trees (Bruguiera gymnoohiza to be exact) in Madagascar. These trees are particularly proficient at absorbing carbon and storing it in their extensive root systems underground. Located on the North West of the island, they will also provide the country with excellent flood and storm protection and provide habitats for a wide range of marine species.

In recent years, Madagascar has experienced significant deforestation, which has led to the displacement of various animal species and hindered the ability of local people to farm and live on their land. The destruction of mangrove estuaries has also contributed to soil erosion, as the bare earth is washed away by the sea. These changes have had a significant impact on the environment and the people of Madagascar.

The Kandrany 2 project in madagascar is run by Eden Reforestation Projects – a non-profit whose mission is to provide fair-wage employment to impoverished villagers as agents of global forest restoration. They hire local people to grow, plant and guard the trees to maturity.

Preventing deforestation in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Solve has contributed to the prevention of deforestation in DRC. Deforestation and degradation is a huge threat to the natural rainforests and mangrove ecosystems in this African Country, driven largely by logging, unsustainable fuel wood extraction and slash and burn agriculture practices. As a result, the buffer against climate change, and protection to local communities from flooding and land degradation that these precious eco-systems were providing is reducing at a rapid rate. The project Solve is working with protects 248,956 hectares of forest from these threats.

The project is not just about reducing carbon emmissions (although it will be credited with reducing 5,671,613 tonnes of CO2e emissions per year throughout it’s 31 year lifespan, totalling over 175 million tonnes of avoided emissions). Also benefitting will be the biodiversity that’s found nowhere else in the world – including the okapi, Grauer’s gorilla, bonobo and Congo peacock – who are reliant on this environment. And, being certified to ‘Verra’s Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standard (CCBS)’, it will bring co-benefits to the local people. Some of the revenue from the carbon credits this project is issued with will be going directly to local communities with the government of the DRC and Ecosystem Restoration Associates Inc. (one of the project developers), pledging to:

  • Build a minimum of 20 schools
  • Construct health care centres in 5 villages
  • Repair and extend secondary hospitals in 2 villages
  • Assist transportation to off-concession markets for agricultural and other products
  • Provide a network of rural canteens
  • Improve agricultural production technique
  • Recruit employees from local communities

Providing high efficiency cookstoves in Tanzania

Solve has contributed to a project that will distribute and install 500,000 fuel-efficient improved cookstoves throughout Tanzania.

Currently, in Tanzania the primary fuel source for over 90% of the population is biomass from firewood or charcoal as these sources of fuel are their only choice. Not only are these sources bas for the planet, but they also cause respitory problems for local people, are time consuming due to the time taken to collect the fuel, and can cause descreased food security due to long cook times.

The ‘cleaner cookstoves’ this project provides therefore can significantly improve the livelihoods of the people of Tanzania and allow the coutnry to progress as a whole with women and children able to spend less time cooking and looking for fuel, and more time on income-generating activities or at school.
